NF1 treatments are different from NF2 treatments proper diagnosis is important. The 2 most common reasons an individual may be falsely diagnosed with both include:

  1. NF2 was not classified until 1987. Therefore anyone with NF2 who had issues would only have been diagnosed with NF prior to that point. It can take years for research conclusions to be publicly known, even by specialists.

  2. Tumors which rise above the skin are an issue for NF2 and NF1, even if individuals with NF1 may have more on their body.

Final Notes

People are often inaccurately diagnosed with NF1 and NF2 when tumors viewable from the skin surface are seen, but additional Neurological review by NF Specialists should be done to determine which form an individual has.

Inaccurate diagnosis of both would make it harder for doctors helping in follow up reviews to know what symptoms an individual faces stem from what possible issue.
